9. A. Second Red Scare Great Fear of communist takeover in the U.S.
Americans and the government reacted in many different ways.
House Un-American Activities Committee – investigated people in the government and Hollywood they suspected of being communist.
Result: Charged and convicted multiple people, including communists who were giving government secrets to the USSR.

10. B. McCarthyism
Senator Joseph McCarthy – held hearings to investigate whether someone was a communist or not.
“Badgered” his witnesses by verbally attacking them, saying they were communists without having many facts.
Caused many people to lose their jobs since people thought they were communists.
Eventually lost power in the Senate.

11. C. Preparing for Nuclear Warfare
“Duck and Cover” drills: students would duck under their desks and cover their heads.
Government produced video to teach this method in schools.
Families built bomb shelters called “fallout shelters” stocked them with food and supplies in case a nuclear bomb was dropped.
Federal-Aid Highway Act (1956) – President Eisenhower created the U.S. “interstate system” of roads.
Created so the military could get to different parts of the country quickly if the U.S. was invaded.
Not ever used for this, but mostly for everyday transportation purposes like today.
