8 Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) PIPEDA became law on April 2000 to promote consumer trust in electronic commerce a Canadian law relating to data privacy.

10 It governs how private sector organizations collect, use and disclose personal information in the course of commercial business.

12 This Act applies to every organization that collects, uses or discloses personal information for commercial purposes or in connection with the operation of a federal work or business.

16 Privacy Act Became effective on July 1 st, 1983 Sets out rules for how institutions of the federal government must deal with personal information of individuals

17 Privacy Act The Act respects the privacy rights of Canadians Gives individuals the right to access and correct personal information held by these institutions

18 Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) ① Information should be available to the public ② Necessary exceptions from the right of access should be limited ③ Disclosure of government information should be reviewed independently by the government

19 Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) 1.Those containing your own personal information; 2.Most university administrative records; 3.Records about the subject matter or amount of funding of University research; 4.Records of University staff employment expenses.

20 Summary to provide a right of access to information under the control of institutions in accordance with the principles that, (i) information should be available to the public, (ii) necessary exemptions from the right of access should be limited and specific, and (iii) decisions on the disclosure of government information should be reviewed independently of government; and (b) to protect the privacy of individuals with respect to personal information about themselves held by institutions and to provide individuals with a right of access to that information. R.S.O. 1990, c. F.31, s. 1. Protects the privacy of individuals with respect to personal information about themselves held by government, institutions and businesses, as well to provide individuals with a right of access to that information
