History of the System 1855: code was drafted 1857: published by the British Board of Trade – 18 flags, 17,000 messages, and 70,000 signals 1932: 6 more flags added for other languages 1947: code became responsibility of the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization 1969: even more flags added and each alpha- numeric code was assigned meaning Purpose: To establish rules for maritime communication everyone can understand

Flag Use 26 square letter flags 10 number pendants Red, white, yellow, and blue Combinations have different meanings 1 flag signal: urgent or common 2 flag signal: distress or maneuvering 3 flag signal: compass points, standard times, verbs, punctuation, or general code and decode signals 4 flag signal: names of ships, geographical signals, or bearings 5 flag signal: time and position 6 flag signal: direction in lat & lon 7 flag signals: lon signals greater than 100 degrees
