9. What is the Discriminant? The discriminant is the following expression: b 2 -4ac (Hey that’s what is underneath the radical in the quadratic formula!!)

10. Where do we find a,b and c? b 2 -4ac

11. So what?? Why do we care? The discriminant is used to determine if there is 2, 1 or no real solutions to an equation

12. How can it do that??  If the Discriminant EQUALS 0, then there is one real solution to the quadratic equation  If the Discriminant is GREATER THAN 0, then there are two real solutions to the quadratic equation  If the Discriminant is LESS THAN 0, then there are no real solutions to the quadratic equation (only imaginary ones ).
