THE ART OF ASTRONOMY Astronomy Aotearoa Julian Priest exhibited ‘INFORMATION COMES FROM THE SUN’
143
Astronomy Aotearoa Julian Priest talks about Tamanui i te Ra ‘The Sun is normally characterised as an energy source, but in all energetic processes total energy is conserved (in closed systems). That is the total energy before a transformation is the same as the total energy after a transformation if you consider the system as a whole.’
144
Astronomy Aotearoa What does change is the distribution of energy and this distribution is called the entropy of the system. Now ‘entropy’ is kind of like disorder or the opposite of _information_ which is a kind of ordering. If you think about the sun, energy in a low entropy state (highly ordered) is transferred out of the sun and hits the earth. On earth this low entropy energy or information is used by life processes to make structure. In turn higher entropy - lower information - energy is transmitted from earth into space as infrared energy.
145
Astronomy Aotearoa But the total energy in the system remains the same - just it's ordering changes. The energy was concentrated in the sun - now it is on earth and being radiated into space. The total energy is the same - but it's distribution has changed. This is why I say Information Comes From the Sun. I want people to think about information being the primary material and energy just being the carrier. The life forms in the camera cases are examples of what happens to the information that comes from the sun when it hits earth - it creates structures in trees and lichens and rocks etc.
146
Astronomy Aotearoa The third level in the work is the Scientific and Maori descriptions of the objects. These are our human descriptions of the object – a different order of information than the physical information embeded in the structure of the objects. This kind of information is formed by us in culture and language and often represented as 1's and 0's in digital systems for instance. Though it has a very different scale it behaves essentially like physical information.
147
Astronomy Aotearoa So the work as a whole describes the information flow through the Sun - Earth - Culture system - originally generated in the sun - flowing to the earth where it is converted into trees and other organic structures - and finally through our human processes of abstraction, culture and language forming what we typically call information - ie sequences of symbols.
