Fire Safety

3
For a fire to exist there must be three things present Oxygen Fuel Heat These three things make up what is known as the FIRE TRIANGLE
4
OXYGEN Oxygen is always present in the home. If, however, you separate heat sources from combustibles, you will have taken the first step toward fire prevention.
5
HEAT Anything that produces heat, for example… 1. stoves the main cause of home fires is from cooking. 2. heating appliances 3. fireplaces 4. Damaged electrical wiring.
6
FUEL SOURCES Anything that will burn, for example… Clothing Furniture Curtains Flammable liquids

FIRE SAFETY In just 30 Seconds, a small flame can become a raging fire. It only takes 5- 10 minutes for the flames to take over the entire house.
9
IF A FIRE SHOULD OCCUR IN YOUR HOME….. 1. GET OUT OF THE HOUSE. Familiarize yourself with at least two exits from each room; for example, one window and one door. Know where the exits are; practice using them.
10
2. HAVE A MEETING PLACE LOCATED OUTSIDE THE HOUSE A fire is no time to be worrying about who made it out and who did not. By establishing a central meeting place outside the house, you can count heads and not have to wonder who might still be inside.
11
4. NEVER GO BACK INSIDE FOR ANY REASON! Once you are outside, do not go back inside. The fire department will be there in a matter of minutes. Stay at the meeting place and wait for the fire department. 3. PHONE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT FROM A NEIGHBOR'S HOUSE (or cell phone)
12
IN A FIRE, SECONDS COUNTS! IN A FIRE, SECONDS COUNT! For early detection of fires, install smoke detectors near your sleeping areas. If you have a multi-story house, install smoke detectors at each level in the home.
13
EXIT DRILLS Establishing EXIT DRILLS IN THE HOME (E.D.I.T.H.) will insure that everyone in the home will be familiar with the proper procedures should a fire occur. If you have sleeping areas located on the second floor, provide an escape ladder or rope. Check these carefully to make certain they are safe. Make sure there is a smoke detector on every floor and in every sleeping area. Check windows that would be used in an escape to see that they open easily.
14
FIRE IS NOT BRIGHT! Should you be caught in smoke, CRAWL! Smoke rises, so stay close to the floor where the air will be less toxic.
15
Clothing, should it ignite, will burn rapidly. If your clothes ignite, DO NOT RUN...STOP, DROP, AND ROLL! Remember, the best step to take is to prevent fires from occurring.
16
YOUR TURN!! You are the fire marshal of your home. You have been commissioned by the state to see how safe your home is. You will see what You will also need to design a fire escape plan for your home and family. Further details will be given on your mission statement.

BURNS There are 3 stages of burns—you may need to help treat yourself or family member in the case of burns.
18
What does a 2 nd degree burn look like? Bright red or pink skin that has moist blisters. More intense pain. How to treat– Don’t apply gels or ointments. Apply a sterile dressing. Seek medical attention if the burn is on the hands, face, or feet. Causes—chemicals, flash flames, extremely hot liquids or solids.
19
What does a 3 rd degree burn look like? Third degree burns can vary in their appearance. They can appear white or bright red on the outer edge to charred, dry, and mahogany colored. There is less initial pain due to more nerve damage. The area around the burn that does not have nerve damage will be painful. Treatment– CALL 911 immediately Causes—flames, chemicals, electrical or hot solids or liquids.
20
What does a first degree burn look like? The skin is red, similar to a sunburn. The burn will be dry and without blisters. There may be some swelling and the person will experience tenderness and some pain. HOW TO TREAT—Run under cool water for 5- 10 minutes. Never put butter, alcohol, or lotion on a burn!! Causes—Scalding water, sunburn, or flash flames
