Tax and Tip (Markups)
Added on to the total cost incurred by the producer of a good or service in order to create a profit
Discount
- A reduction in price on the amount of goods or a service

4. Sales Tax and Tip
Sales Tax – Percentage of the cost of a good or service paid to a seller. (added to the total cost of the bill)
Tip - a gratuity or a voluntary additional payment made for a service.

Find the tip… if needed (usually calculated based on total of bill not including the sales tax)

Add the food bill, tip, and sales tax.

At a restaurant, you order a meal that costs $12. You leave a 20% tip. The sales tax is 5%. What is the total cost of the meal?
Steps:
Find the tip.
Find the sales tax.
Add the bill, tip, and tax.
20% ∙ 12
= $2.40
**You can either multiply $12 by .20 or divide $12 by 5
5% ∙ 12
= $0.60
**You multiply $12 by .05
$12 + $ $0.60
= $15
The total cost is $15

At a restaurant, you order a meal that costs $8. You leave a 15% tip. The sales tax is 6%. What is the total cost of the meal?
Steps:
Find the tip.
Find the sales tax.
Add the bill, tip, and tax.

6% ∙ 8 =

The total cost is $9.68
