What is a clause? A clause is a group of words within a sentence that contains both a subject and a verb. Remember the phrase? The phrase has the same definition except it DOES NOT have a subject and verb.

Examples of Both Clause: The grammar test that we are preparing for is a test that everyone at Beverly takes. Phrase: The grammar final, taken on January 22, is a test that everyone at Beverly takes.

Types of Clauses 2 types of clauses on the test: Independent & Subordinate (Dependent)

Independent Clause What does the word independent mean? Something can function by itself. Can the clause on the right function as a complete sentence on its own? Steven loves to sleep in during the Winter Break, and Penelope enjoyed getting up early and jogging.

Independent Clause Yes, it can. Therefore the clause is independent. Steven loves to sleep in during the Winter Break, and Penelope enjoyed getting up early and jogging.

Subordinate (Dependent) Clause What does the word dependent mean? Reliant, needy Does the clause on the right need more to be a complete sentence? It is obvious Tybalt has some anger issues because he is always looking for a fight.
