Ch 2.1 Translating Equations
Objective: To translate English sentences into mathematical equations and inequalities.
2
Key Words _ + plus minus times divide add subtract multiply quotient
increased by decreased by product per sum diminished by of total difference twice ( 2) less more than less than subtracted from
3
More Key Words Equality (=) equals, results in, and is are some of the words that represent equality. Inequality (<, >, ≠,) is less than, is greater than, and unequal to are some of the phrases that represent inequality.
4
Read Carefully! 5 more than x x + 5 5 is more than x 5 > x 5 less x
The keyword(s) determine which math symbol to use 5 more than x x + 5 5 is more than x 5 > x 5 less x 5 - x 5 less than x x - 5 5 is less than x 5 < x

Examples 1) Eight less than twice the sum of four and y
Translate each sentence into a mathematical equation or inequality. 1) Eight less than twice the sum of four and y is the same as 19. 2) Six more than x is more than twice the difference of x and 7. 3) The quotient of m and 3 is six less than the product of 10 and m. 4) Five less than x is less than five less x. 2(4 + y) - 8 = 19 x + 6 > 2(x - 7) (m ÷ 3) = (10 m) - 6 x - 5 < 5 - x

Classwork 1) The quotient of n and 5 is equal to 35. 2)
Translate each sentence into a mathematical equation or inequality. 1) The quotient of n and 5 is equal to 35. 2) The difference of a number and 11 is 15. 3) The product of a number and 10 is equal to 19. 4) The sum of a number and 12 is 40.

Classwork 5) The sum of x and 9 is more than 42. 6)
Translate each sentence into a mathematical equation or inequality. 5) The sum of x and 9 is more than 42. 6) y increased by 11 is less than 5. 7) 7 more than a number is more than 6. 8) Twice a number is less than 30.
8
Classwork Translate each sentence into a mathematical equation or inequality. 9) 6 more than x is less than or equal to the difference of x and 7. 10) Twice the sum of n and 8 is more than 5 times the quotient of n and 20.
