Oil Choices, Programs and Best Practices Jerry Rogers 9/17/2014 National Association of Fleet Administrators New England Chapter

 Equipment uptime  Alternative fuels  Longer drain intervals  Lower total cost of maintenance  Synthetics and fuel economy  Selective Catalytic Reduction  PC-11 engine oil category  Lower viscosity grade HDEO Issues facing you today

Consider: What is your starting point? Have you done an equipment survey? Do you do Oil Analysis? In House/Commercial Lab? Are you using Synthetics or Blends vs Conventional Oils? What are your maintenance goals? Does your lubricant match your goal? Extended Drain? Fuel Economy?

A Good Equipment Survey Will: List all equipment to be lubricated List the Make, Model and Type of equipment List each component on the equipment Identify the correct lubricants to be used Identify the OEM recommended change interval

Oil Analysis Includes four categories of information Equipment Information Oil Information Contaminant Information Evaluative Comments In House VS Commercial Lab Garbage In – Garbage Out You may not see a difference between Conventional, Synthetic Blends and Synthetics

You have the choices between Conventional Oils 5w20 -5w30 15w40-10w30 Synthetic Blends 5w20-5w30 10w30-15w40 Full Synthetics 5w20-5w30-0w30 5w40 Better Lubricants

If your goal is extended drains did you know that all OEM’s have their own recommendations on intervals?

Annual Fuel Savings could be up to $1,280 per truck Up to 1.6% Annual fuel savings At 120,000 miles per year At 6 Miles Per Gallon At $4.00 Diesel Per Gallon This can provide a fleet of 25 trucks a potential fuel cost saving of $32,000 annually. Did you know that if your goal is fuel economy………….

Did you also know that switching to a Full Synthetic will probably save you less that that?

Resources Available: Your Equipment Manual OEM Representative Oil Company Technical Specialist A Qualified Lube Specialist-------------- 

In Summary: Best Practices for Fleet Maintenance includes: Having a current fleet survey Using Oil Analysis Embracing New Technology Using higher quality products Using the resources available to assist you

What about SCR????

 New engine technology to meet emissions  Fuel economy standards  As well as……  Changes in hardware  Engine test obsolescence Why is PC 11 around the corner?
