Presentation on theme: "What is a QUADRILATERAL?"— Presentation transcript:

1 What is a QUADRILATERAL?

2 Please teach your partner what quadrilateral means.
4 SIDE

3 Quadrilaterals Which of these shapes would be called “quadrilaterals”?
trapezoid square rhombus parallelogram rectangle

4 In this slide show you will learn that we identify quadrilaterals by:
their angles and the length of their sides.

5 Square A square has four sides that are each the same length.
It also has four right angles (perfect corners). 1 4 Parallel Lines? 3 2 Please teach your partner why it is a square

6 Rhombus A rhombus has four sides that are each the same length.
But it has two acute and two obtuse angles. obtuse acute Parallel Lines? acute obtuse

7 Square and Rhombus A square and a rhombus both have four sides that are the same length. So, how are they different?

8 Square and Rhombus A rhombus can be thought of as a slanted square.
If we push on the left-hand side of this square, it might end up looking like… a rhombus.

9 The only difference between a square and a rhombus is… their angles
The only difference between a square and a rhombus is… their angles! Please teach your partner the difference between a square and a rhombus and how they are the same & different using math vocabulary & names.

10 Trapezoid A trapezoid has four sides. They are all different lengths.
Two sides are parallel. The opposing two sides are not parallel. Those are not parallel. Those are parallel. Please teach your partner what a trapezoid is…

11 Rectangle A rectangle has four sides – two long sides and two short sides. Two sides are parallel. The opposing two sides are also parallel. It also has four right angles. Teach your partner the Difference between a rectangle and a rhombus.

12 Parallelogram A parallelogram has four sides – two long sides and two short sides. Two sides are parallel. The opposing two sides are also parallel. But, it has two acute and two obtuse angles.

13 Rectangle and Parallelogram
A parallelogram can be thought of as a slanted rectangle. If we push on the left-hand side of this rectangle, it might end up looking like… Please teach your partner the difference between a rectangle and a parallelogram. a parallelogram.

14 The only difference between a rectangle and a parallelogram is their angles.

15 Use the following table to make comparisons using the quadrilaterals.

16 Quadrilaterals SHAPE SIDES ANGLES PARALLEL LINES Square Rhombus
Trapezoid Rectangle Parallelogram 4 same length 4 right angles 2 sets 4 same length 2 acute obtuse 2 sets Different lengths Different angles 1 set 2 long, short 4 right angles 2 sets 2 acute obtuse 2 long, short 2 sets

17 Write in your journals:
What is the difference between a square and a rhombus? What is the difference between a rectangle and a parallelogram? Why is a trapezoid a quadrilateral and not a parallelogram?
