3 Questions to be answered… (What’s it to me????)  Why is this time period referred to as ‘Jacksonian democracy?’  Was this time period actually more democratic than previous years?  Which social groups benefited from this time period, and which groups did not? …do ALL people have power?  Who was Andrew Jackson, and why in the world are we learning about him?

4 Yeah, so what do I care? Warm up question:  How far does democracy extend to you? Consider voting requirements, rights that you have, and laws that affect you. In the 1820s, who could vote?

5 Jacksonian Democracy  “Jacksonian” democracy did not describe Jackson’s beliefs about government or who should participate in government.  It was the term used for what democracy had “become” by the time Andrew Jackson became President…  HUH????

7 Jackson era: more democratic?  Yes. …but do we have Jackson to thank for that?

8 Which social groups benefited during this era? The “Common Man” White male factory workers and farmers

9 Who was left out of the political process? Minorities….

12 Making predictions…  If someone were to ask you the question: “Andrew Jackson: hero or villain?” How would you answer it? Answer this question using information you may already know about Jackson. If you do not know anything, make an educated assumption about him. Justify your answer with some examples the video mentioned.

13 Andrew Jackson…the good and bad 1. He's on the twenty. 2. His nickname was "Old Hickory." 3. He fought in more than one war. 4. He had really funky hair. 5. He destroyed the national bank. 6. He was really awful to the Native Americans.
