2011 National Grid Energy Expo 2 What are the challenges? Efficiency has never been more important Operating budgets are under pressure Organizations are under pressure to reduce energy use. Energy costs are increasing Demand for energy is increasing. Plants must be maintained to stay efficient Plants must be retrofitted to get more efficient. According to the widely published IFMA Energy Efficiency Indicator : 65% are paying more attention to energy efficiency now than they did 1 year ago. 97% rate energy cost savings as the most important factor influencing their increased attention to energy efficiency. 75% believe significant legislation mandating energy efficiency and/or carbon reduction is likely within the next 2 years. 8 2011 National Grid Energy Expo 8 Chiller plants are one of the largest energy savings opportunities Typical commercial building energy usage profile Total Building Energy Use Total Building Energy Use Total HVAC Energy Use Chiller Plant Energy Use

2011 National Grid Energy Expo 9 Automation of system Application of components Selection of system components Design of system infrastructure Design decisions are the foundation of potential plant efficiency Design Decisions

2011 National Grid Energy Expo 10 Operating decisions can build upon the foundation of design decisions to enhance potential plant efficiency Maintenance Optimization Automation of system Application of components Selection of system components Design of system infrastructure Operating Decisions Design Decisions Measurement, Verification, Management

2011 National Grid Energy Expo 11 Design and Operating Decisions A plant with room to improve No tracking of data or reportingNo optimizationReactive maintenanceManual control of plantImproperly applied equipmentMinimum efficiency equipmentAll constant speed plant Chiller Plant Efficiency Scale (kw/ton)

2011 National Grid Energy Expo 12 A fully-featured EMS is a prerequisite to excellent plant efficiency. EMS makes an ideal platform for plant efficiency Beyond starting and stopping equipment. Intelligent equipment selection and operation; continuous adaptive tuning algorithms Standard protocols such as BACnet help assure info transparency and flow Information presented at the right level of detail, at the right place, at the right time. Information helps realize efficiency potential & sustain it

2011 National Grid Energy Expo 13 To maximize efficiency, plants should be designed and operated holistically Pumps & Motors Variable Speed Drives But, efficient and capable components can get you only so far. Cooling Towers Chillers Automation & Optimization

2011 National Grid Energy Expo 14 Prevent system degradation with performance measurement, verification and management service  Web-based for 24/7 access to real-time and historical performance information  Data presented in easy-to-read graphs, charts and plant overview display  Operators have immediate visibility to inefficient system operation.  Analysis capabilities enable fast system fault diagnosis  Simplified reporting with at-a-glance energy dashboard and reports Central Plant Optimization MVM software for persistent performance

2011 National Grid Energy Expo 15 Design and Operating Decisions A best-in-class plant Real-time measurement & dashboard reporting; fault analysis Full optimization programPredictive maintenanceDemand-based relational controlBest-in-class equipment applicationHigh efficiency equipmentAll variable speed plant Chiller Plant Efficiency Scale (kw/ton)
