WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING? PRESENTED BY BRIAN DUKE, RISHI SINGH & JOSE CERVANTES

INTRODUCTION Cloud Computing is a type of computing that relies on sharing computing resources rather than having local servers or personal devices to handle applications. The cloud is often used as a metaphor for the Internet. Major examples of cloud computing are Google Drive, Apple iCloud

HISTORY The concept of shared computer access started in the 1950s with the mainframe computing. The first milestone in cloud computing history was the arrival of salesforce.com in 1999, which pioneered the concept of providing enterprise application through a simple website. Another big milestone came in 2009, as Web 2.0 hit its stride, and Google and others started to offer browser-based enterprise applications, though services such as Google Apps.

TYPES OF CLOUD Public Cloud- A cloud is called a "public cloud" when the services are rendered over a network that is open for public use. Public cloud services may be free or offered on a pay-per-usage model. Example, Amazon AWS, Microsoft and Google. Private Cloud- Private cloud is cloud infrastructure operated solely for a single organization, whether managed internally or by a third-party, and hosted either internally or externally

TYPES OF CLOUD CONT. Community Cloud- Community cloud shares infrastructure between several organizations from a specific community with common concerns (security, compliance, etc.), whether managed internally or by a third-party, and either hosted internally or externally. Hybrid Cloud- Hybrid cloud is a composition of two or more clouds (private, community or public) that remain distinct entities but are bound together, offering the benefits of multiple deployment models. Hybrid cloud can also mean the ability to connect collocation, managed and/or dedicated services with cloud resources.

SaaS (Software-as-a-service). Any application hosted on a remote server(Web browser) that can be accessed over the internet is considered a SaaS. Example: Cisco’s WebEx, Netflix, Dropbox IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)- it provides off-site servers, storage, networking hardware which can be rented and accessed over the internet. Example: Amazon, Microsoft, Red Hat PaaS(Platform-as-a-Service)- it provides services such as developing or deploying application over the internet using visualized servers. Ex Google app engine, Microsoft Azure LAYERS OF CLOUD COMPUTING

CLOUD COMPUTING AND MANAGEMENT Cloud computing solutions can be adjusted as needed with as much or as little as required for certain projects, reducing cost. Social Media services on the cloud help when recruiting, gathering information on potential customers, and show trends in current marketplace to discuss current and future strategies. Speed of IT solution implementation on the cloud is greatly increased vs traditional IT systems.

SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE (SAAS) A specific application or service offered to a customer via subscription. Examples: Dropbox Quickbooks Many apps on your smartphone or tablet

PLATFORM AS A SERVICE (PAAS) These allow businesses a platform that they can create and disseminate apps and business services that are part of one platform. Examples: Windows Azure Google App Engine

INFRASTRUCTURE AS A SERVICE (IAAS) Here, you can purchase infrastructure (i.e., hardware, servers) from a vendor as well as virtual resources. Examples: IBM Amazon Google Compute Engine

CLOUD COMPUTING FOR SMALL BUSINESS Adobe Forms Central Interactive forms with business intelligence capability; allows businesses to analyze data from submitted forms. Docusign Allows you to digitally sign important documents Office 365

CLOUD COMPUTING WE PROBABLY ALL USE Google Drive Apple iCloud Amazon Cloud Drive Netflix Etc., etc. Cloud computing laptops? Laptops with just enough hard drive space to run a browser, and everything else is done online (Samsung Chromebook)

POTENTIAL DOWNSIDES OF CLOUD COMPUTING Security, stability, and ownership Security Since these services are offered online and usually stored by a third party, these accounts can be hacked and data can be stolen or lost Stability If the third party site running your online service goes down and you rely on it heavily, you are in a heap of trouble. (Intuit example from 2010: site went down for two days and people could not access Quicken, QuickBooks, or TurboTax during that time. Bad for customers and bad for Intuit)

POTENTIAL DOWNSIDES OF CLOUD COMPUTING, CONTINUED Ownership, privacy Intellectual property issues If you hand over certain information to a third party, who owns the data? When officers or regulators want the information, do they need your consent to search the information online? Emerging and evolving privacy issues Problem for certain industries, like attorneys and companies who handle a lot of proprietary information, CPA’s, etc.
