Dear Linda... It has been quite a challenging month for me, since we relocated to a new home He has handled the transition quite well © Linda Hodgdon All Rights Reserved

But the problem... He is in first grade this year with a new teacher Having difficulty in transitioning at the end of the day to go home The teacher didn't understand why he didn't want to go home Matthew has difficulty with expressive language & did not express why He began expressing with his body language, whining a bit and eventually became very upset all the way home © Linda Hodgdon All Rights Reserved

Cause... I knew the reason why the behavior was occurring He wanted to stay and play the computer in the classroom © Linda Hodgdon All Rights Reserved

Teamwork Teacher asked me to give her any solutions to resolve the problem I took opportunity to reference Visual Strategies I told her it would be helpful write out a card that identified the sequence of steps to prepare him for the transition when it was time to go home © Linda Hodgdon All Rights Reserved

Validation I also talked to Matthew to validate that I understood what he was trying to communicate to me – why he wanted to stay – also why we had to go home © Linda Hodgdon All Rights Reserved

Follow through The teacher did make a transition list Today when I picked him up from school the transition to go home was much better without him getting so upset © Linda Hodgdon All Rights Reserved

I learned a few things from this scenario It was important for me to validate that I understood what he was trying to communicate He needed help in sequencing through the transition He needed to understand the reason why we had to go home © Linda Hodgdon All Rights Reserved

A “typical” letter I receive I have been using visual strategies for several years. I am happy to say that through the use of these strategies, I have helped my students with Autism transition from the elementary school to the middle school. Because not all visual strategies have to be written on paper, I have made DVDs of the middle school for each of these students. We enter the door they will enter, with a little dialogue explaining each item/place of interest. It has been a huge help and a lot of fun for me to teach in this manner. Kids on the spectrum love videos. What better way to transition and engage their attention? Cathy Gelatka, SLP Warwick School District © Linda Hodgdon All Rights Reserved
