Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder where people can’t control their thoughts, feelings, ideas, obsessions, behaviors, etc. which leads them to do something. (compulsive) It’s also been found to affect animals and how they act when in certain situations.

Been around for thousands of years Started being described 100 years ago Sudden focus on mental illnesses 1-3% of people in the U.S have it = 2/3 million 1 in 50 people have it

Genetic ( DNA) it can be passed down Brain circuit that regulates our behavior is activated Personal thoughts Stress These are all theories and really haven’t been proven by science.

Obsessions/ compulsions that aren’t caused by drugs/medical illness These include: Fears Excessive focus on certain things Repetition Arranging things ALL the time Hoarding

Many medical and psychological tests Physical exams Laboratory tests Psychological evaluation Repetitive behaviors Person acknowledges they have a problem Persistent thoughts

There’s no real cure Take anti-depressants to keep compulsions under control Therapy Talking to psychiatrist, psychologist, counselor, etc. Help you with how to deal with problems

OCD is a functional disorder because it’s in the person’s head. There is nothing physically wrong with them it’s how they deal with a problem in their life or how they express their stress.
