Professional Development System College and Career Readiness Content knowledge, skills and habits Successful in postsecondary education or training that leads to a sustaining career. Examples of skills and knowledge needed include: – Proficiency in reading a wide range of materials – Fluent writing in several modes – Quantitative literacy through algebra and including geometry combined with the ability to understand and interpret data Many of the skills and knowledge needed are addressed in the CCRS. Skills needed for success in college and careers often overlap. from Educational Policy and Improvement Center 3

Professional Development System Common Core State Standards First developed for K-12 in 2010 Identified what was essential for students to know to be prepared for postsecondary training, work or citizenship Adopted by 46 states Anchored by empirical evidence of what employers and educators actually demand of prospective employees and students 4

Professional Development System College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education Three questions were asked regarding the Common Core State Standards 1.What content in the area of English language areas and literacy (ELA/literacy) is most relevant to preparing adult students for success in higher education and training programs? 2.Same question asked of Math ~ What content in the area of mathematics is most relevant to preparing adult students for success in higher education and training programs? 3.Which standards in each content area are most important for adult students? Answered by a cross section of stakeholders who serve adults 5

Professional Development System Purpose of CCRS Forge a stronger link between adult ed, postsecondary, and work Starting point for increasing awareness and understanding of skills and knowledge needed to be prepared for further education and employment Offer clear sign posts indicating what is most important for college and career readiness Standards-based education movement in adult ed has resulted in (or is working toward) – Clearer expectations for students – Improved curriculum and instruction ~ provide focus and direction for instruction that will lead to preparation for college and career – Creating PD for instructional staff 6

Professional Development System What the CCRS are NOT A hierarchy of importance ~ order of standards within a level does not represent an order in which they are to be taught They don’t specify how instructors should teach Standards are not a curriculum see page 8 in document for full list 7

Professional Development System Key Shifts in ELA Standards Complexity: Regular practice with complex text and its academic language Evidence: Reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational Knowledge: Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction 8

Professional Development System Key Shifts in Math Standards Focus: Focusing strongly where the standards focus Coherence: Designing learning around coherent progressions level to level Rigor: Pursuing conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application – all with equal intensity 9
