2 What is it? Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. They form the southern end of the Niagara Gorge. Located on the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, the combined falls have form the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world.

3 Where is it? Border of Ontario, Canada & New York, U.S.A

4 How big are the falls ? The Niagara River is about 58 kilometres in length and is the natural outlet from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The elevation between the two lakes is about 99 metres , half occurring at the Falls themselves. The total area drained by the Niagara River is approximately 684,000 square kilometres. The average fall from Lake Erie to the beginning of the upper Niagara Rapids is only 2.7 metres (9 ft.) Below the Chip pawa -Grass Island Pool control structure, the river falls 15 metres (50 ft.) to the brink of the Falls. The deepest section in the Niagara River is just below the Falls. It is so deep it equals the height of the Falls above, 52 metres (170 ft.).

5 How was Niagra falls formed?
In geological time, Niagara Falls is quite young. The formation of the falls began at the end of the Ice Age. Large torrents of water were released from the melting ice, draining into what is now the Niagara River. Some 12,000 years ago, the water plunged over the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, a cliff at what is now Lewiston, New York. The force of the water wore away the rock layers and Niagara Falls moved upstream, eventually reaching its present location. The Niagara Falls formation is a slow process that continues today. The annual freezing and thawing of the Niagara River still wears away at the rocks under the surface. Gradual erosion and periodic rock falls steadily move Niagara Falls farther upstream. However, modern influences have caused the falls to wear away less quickly.

The Niagara Falls were created by glacier activity around years ago. The Niagara Falls are a source of hydropower, producing large amounts of electricity. Hydroelectric stations in the area divert less water during the summer when tourist numbers are high, ensuring a spectacular flow of water for visitors The first tightrope walker to cross the Niagara Falls did so in 1859. In 2012 Nik Wallenda became the first person to cross the Niagara Falls by tightrope in 116 years. He did so after receiving permission from both the Canadian and United States governments, although he was required to carry his passport and present it on entry to the Canadian side of the falls.
