MATHEMATICS Converting between Metric and Imperial Units
2
Lesson Objectives The aim of this powerpoint is to help you… Convert between metric & imperial units for: Length Mass Capacity
3
Length A 30cm ruler is approximately 12 inches (or 1 foot) long… …therefore a yard is approximately 90cm Another rough conversion rate is that 8km is approximately 5 miles (ie. 1 mile 1.6km)
4
Mass 1 oz (ounce) is about 28g so… …4oz is a little more than 100g A 1kg bag of sugar is a little over 2lb (pounds)
5
Capacity There are approximately 1.75 pints of milk in a 1 litre carton of milk 1 gallon of petrol is about 4.5 litres
6
Metric-Imperial Conversions Using the approximate equivalence rate… …to convert one type of unit to another, divide the unit you are given by its value in the equivalence rate then multiply by the other value in the equivalence rate Remember to DIVIDE the common unit
7
Examples Convert 48km to miles [Exchange rate: 5 miles 8km] (48km ÷ 8km) × 5 miles 30 miles Convert 30in into cm [Exchange rate: 1in 2.54cm] (30in ÷ 1in) × 2.54cm 76.2cm Convert 44lb into kg [Exchange rate: 1kg 2.2lb] (44lb ÷ 2.2lb) × 1kg 20kg
