3 The policy document: minimum admission requirements for Higher Education provides statutory minimum admission requirements for HE study replace range of current policies with one single policy framework Applicable to all HEIs – private and public Applies to Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor Degree Programmes Effective from 1 January 2009

4 Higher Education South Africa (HESA) = body to set minimum admission requirements for Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor Degree Programmes requiring NSC HEIs = set specific admission requirements for particular programmes Applies specifically to learners using NSC as route to HE study Policy Considerations

5 Possibilities for higher education higher education doesn’t necessarily mean a university degree but provides possibilities of specialised employment Various qualifications and access to these depend on your performance - HEIs may set requirements that are higher than the minimum requirements in the document.

6 ALL require a NSC, but differ in achievement ratings required

7 HIGHER CERTIFICATE appropriate combinations of NCS subjects at specified levels of achievement example : Higher Certificate in Architectural Design – achieve at specified level in Design and an associated NCS subject DIPLOMA rating of 3+ (40%+) in any four NCS subjects appropriate combinations of NCS subjects at specified levels of achievement example : Diploma in Datametrics - achieve at a prescribed level in Mathematics or IT BACHELOR’S DEGREE Rating of 4+ (50%+) in four NCS subjects appearing on the designated subject list appropriate combinations of NCS subjects at specified levels of achievement example : Bachelor’s Degree in Science – offer Maths and Science and achieve at specified level in both subjects

8 Subjects bearing 20 credits, excluding LO (10 credits) NSC = common basis for admission list applicable for 3 years, then review Responsibility of HEIs to decide on subject combinations for particular programmes and publicise widely so that learners can be properly advised on subject choices Recognised NCS Subjects
