+ The Color Wheel Color Is the visual quality of objects created by the amount of light they reflect or absorb.

+ Color Wheel Vocabulary Hue- Another word for color Primary Colors- A color that cannot be mixed from other colors, but from which other colors are made. The primary colors are red, blue and yellow. Secondary Colors- A color made by mixing two primary colors. The secondary colors are orange, violet, and green. Intermediate Color- A color that is a mixture or a primary and a secondary color that are next to each other on the color wheel. Blue-green, Red-orange and red violet are example of intermediate colors. (the primary color is always listed first)

+ Warm and Cool Colors Warm colors- The family of colors that includes reds, yellows and oranges. Warm colors bring to mind warm things, places, and feelings. Yellow, yellow-orange, orange, red-orange, re, red violet Cool Colors- The family of colors that includes greens, blues, and violets. Cool colors bring to mind cool things, places and feelings. Violet, blue-violet, blue, blue- green, green, yellow-green

+ Color Schemes A plan for combining colors in a work of art.

+ Color Schemes Vocabulary Monochromatic- A color scheme that uses different values of a single hue by showing tints and shades of the same hue. Analogous- Colors that appear next to each other on the color wheel. Analogous colors have one hue in common. For example, blue, blue-green, and blue violet all contain blue. Also known as related colors. Complementary- Colors that contrast with one another. Complementary colors are opposite one another on the color wheel. Neutral- A word used for black white and tints and shades of gray. Some artist use tints and shades of brown as neutrals.

+ Value in Color Schemes Value- The lightness or darkness of a color. Tints have a light value. Shades have a dark value. Value is an element of art Tints- A light value of a color such as pink that is created by mixing a hue with white. Also the lightness of a color value. Shades- A color made by adding black to a hue. For example, Adding black to green results in dark green.
