1 SPACE FRAME Interface between the LGT and the IST 21/06/2011 Marco Ciapetti

2 Introduction The IST (Inner Support Tube) insertion will be done by mean of the LGT (Long Guiding Tube), once the current beam pipe will be removed The IST inner diameter is 85mm the outer diameter is 86mm The LGT outer diameter is 55mm + the rolling spheres. It’s envelope is 57.6mm There is the need for an interface between the IST and the LGT. This interface is called “Space Frame” 2

3 IBL insertion The macro steps of the IBL insertion will be: 1.Insertion of the LGT inside the current beam pipe (ᴓ 58mm) 2.Connection of the LGT to the motor and the tensioning wire 3.Extraction of the current beam pipe 4.Insertion of the IST + Space frame 5.Connection of the IST to the various supports 6.Extraction of the Space frame + the LGT 7.Insertion of the IBL 3

4 Space frame The current version of the Space frame is a carbon fibre pipe (L = 6620mm - ᴓ i = 58mm - ᴓ o = 60mm) with 7 peek flanges. Due to commercial sizes constraints (max length is 4000mm), the main pipe will be split in 2 parts and joined together with a joint (L = 300mm - ᴓ i = 60mm - ᴓ o = 64mm) Among the 7 flanges, there will be 2 special flanges (the external ones). These special flanges will slightly different from the others due to the presence of stopper rings screwed on them. 4

14 Special flange 14 Stopper ring ᴓ o = 86mm Modified flange 3 x M3-30 screws 3 x M3 nuts 6 x 3-7 normal washers Either one of the following solution could be used: 1.Each nut could be weld to its washer and the washer glued to the modified flange 2.Thread directly the modified flange without the need for the nuts and second washers

15 Special flange 15 The stopper ring of the special flange is used for the fine positioning of the Space frame with respect to the IST. During the insertion of the Space frame inside the IST, one of the two stopper rings is removed. The Space frame is slid inside the IST and in the end the second stopper ring is added and tighten using the bolts.

22 Further work Design and realize the connection interface between the LGT and the Space frame for the extraction of the LGT Realize a prototype of the Space frame in order to check gaps and clearance between the parts, and to control the response of the various material to our need Design and realize the interfaces with the extraction/insertion tables (intermediate table, pit table, etc.) 22
