This presentation gives a brief description of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. It tells you what the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is how it can help you how to look for information in it The presentation will take about 5 minutes

This is the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography home page. The Oxford DNB provides over 58,500 biographies of anyone who was anyone in British history, from the Romans to the 21st century. From film stars to physicists, landed gentry to local heroes, and murderers to millionaires, all human life is here.

Search for a person by typing their name into the Quick Search box at the top right, or in the centre of the homepage. john lennon Notice that you can now extend the search to other Oxford University Press online resources by using the Oxford Index underbar.

As well as printing and emailing the biography, you can easily copy and paste the citation information.

Another link on the left in this biography takes you to a list of chart- toppers in the ODNB. Notice the links in the left column to other online resources such as the American National Biography and the National Portrait Gallery.

It is easy to compile a list of people with a connection to your home town. Click on the Search tab at the top. Then, click on People on the orange bar.

Type the name of the town into the Place box… Sheffield …and click on Search.

You can also listen to some of the biographies. Click on the name of the current episode to see the full list of available podcasts. You can follow the Oxford DNB on twitter.

Look in the Open Shelves area for feature maps, galleries, themed articles, reference lists, and reference groups

Practice Now you have had a brief introduction, why not explore for yourself? Have a go at finding the answers to these questions. What was Jack Crawford famous for? How many people from your local town are featured in the DNB? How many people with your surname are featured? How much money did George Harrison leave in his will?
