Director’s Concept The director’s vision was to modernize the characters and the setting from the original play to something more realistic to present day. The adapted story takes place in contemporary suburbia and the costumes, makeup, and set design were chosen to accurately reflect this time period.

Norma Norma is Henry’s wife, a modern day version of the original character, Nora Helmer from the play. She is naive and is not taken seriously by her husband. There is a party going on upstairs throughout the film which is why a dress is appropriate for this character. She cares about her appearance and wants to be perceived as wealthy which is why black cocktail dress and classy black heels were chosen for this character.

Henry Henry is Norma’s husband. He acts superior to his wife and sees her as foolish and childlike. He is overly concerned with his reputation and values his social status more than his relationship with Nora. The casual party going on throughout the film reflects his nice, but informal attire.
5
Kramer A short, somewhat stumpy man with broad shoulders. A shabby grey suit was chosen to emphasize Kramer’s function in the film. He thinks he has the power to blackmail Norma into getting his job back, but as Norma’s marriage begins to crumble, Kramer seems somewhat insignificant. This insignificance influenced the neutral color costume choice.
