B.C. FISHING INDUSTRY By Sean Foulkes

THE HISTORY OF B.C. FISHING  Before European settlers First Nations people fished along the coast, they fished for Cod, Salmon, Halibut, Seal, Haddock and Whale.  When the European Settlers arrived they relied on the ocean as their main source of food too, over time fishing became an industry

CANNING PLANTS  Instead of drying fish for export settlers used the canning method which was less work and better resembled fresh fish.  In the 1870’s the first major canning plant opened up in AnnieVille on the Fraser River.  Once canned the fish would be transported to Cape Horn and then to Europe.

THE INDUSTRY IN B.C.  The fishery industry of B.C. is made up of four sectors which are, commercial fishing, aquaculture, sport fishing and seafood processing.  The industry provides economic benefits for the Canadian government.  Fish and aquatic goods not only circulate the economy but they are exported all over the world as well.  B.C. also makes up almost 50% of Canada's fish revenue.  The industry provides many jobs for individuals in need of work.

OCEAN ACIDIFICATION  Ocean Acidification is caused by chemical runoff, oil spills and acid precipitation.  Ocean Acidification is the decrease in Ph levels which causes the ocean to become more acidic. This causes producer organisms to be harmed, which eventually causes problems further up the food chain in the future.

HOW IT AFFECTS THE INDUSTRY  Ocean Acidification harms producer organisms at the bottom of the food chain which causes harm to higher up organisms because there is a lack of food.  It also makes some smaller organisms act differently around their natural predators causing there populations to decrease.

HOW IT AFFECTS THE GLOBE  Ocean Acidification has caused a decrease in the worlds fish stocks.  Also it has made the number of calcium carbonate shelled organisms decrease due to the negative reaction between calcium carbonate and acid.

OTHER ISSUES  Ocean Acidification also directly impacts many of the oceans most diverse ecosystems, Ocean Acidification destroys coral reefs where many smaller organisms live.  By the end of this century 70% of the worlds coral reefs could experience corrosive conditions if nothing is done in order to stop this issue.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS  One solution would be to find a better alternative fuel source to decrease CO2 levels in our atmosphere.  Another solution would be better reaction time for chemical and oil spills in order to clean up the spill in quicker time.  A third solution would be to help clean up the amount of garbage that is dumped into the worlds oceans.
