Identify Causes of the Rebellions Red River Rebellion: HBC sold Rupert’s land without consulting the Metis Land speculators & surveyors came ignoring Metis Land Claims Metis List of Rights were ignored. Northwest Rebellion: White & Metis Settlers, and Indigenous Peoples felt ignored by Ottawa. Shrinking number of Buffalo and lack of food Ottawa sent surveyors to Northwest, raising fear that Metis land claims would be ignored. **IF YOU HAVE MORE THAT AREN’T LISTED RAISE YOUR HAND**

National Policy: Protective Tariffs – Made affordable US good Unaffordable and causing Canadians to by Canadian Manufactured Goods Settlement of the West – Would create $$$ through massive agricultural exports. CPR- Needed to ship goods across the country and could open up access to the Asian market via BC. Important because it was the policy that got John A. Macdonald Re- elected.

Review Package 8.) Why were the NWMP created? To stem the growing lawlessness in the west, especially in relation to the Whiskey Trade. The Cypress Hills Massacre increased the need for the NWMP, which were put into action the following year.
