1,000 Tornadoes are storms that are shaped like a funnel. They can get up to speeds of about 400 miles per hour! Tornadoes are a lot like hurricanes, except they are smaller. When tornadoes are moving about the jump from place to place instead of staying on the ground. Click on the picture to find out approximately how many tornadoes occur in a year. How far away are storms? You can tell by counting the seconds between lightening and thunder. Then divide the number of seconds by five, that answer is the number of miles you are from the storm. Scientists guess that there are about 1,800 thunderstorms across the earth each day! Return to table of contents Thunderstorms generally occur during the summer months, but they can occur year round. Thunderstorms are also known as electric storms. Thunderstorms produce a loud boom called thunder. Thunderstorms even though the are common can have damaging affects. Another damaging effect is hail, although hail does not occur during every thunderstorm.
