2. Research support The bobo doll experiment doesn’t tell us why child copies when the model is gone. Later study by Bandura & Walters (1963)  Children who saw model rewarded for aggressive behaviour were more aggressive.  Children who saw model punished showed less aggression in play.  Children who saw model given neither were in- between. Shows support for vicarious learning. A02

3. Role of punishment Learning or performance? Bandura (1965) repeated the 1963 study. He offered rewards to the children to repeat the aggressive behaviour after exposure to the model who was punished/rewarded or neither. This resulted in all 3 groups copying a similar number of times. Learning does take place but performance is affected by operant conditioning. A02

4. What about adults? Phillips (1986) found homicide rates in the US always increased in the week following a major boxing match. A02

5. Vicarious learning SLT can explain aggressive behaviour in the absence of direct reinforcement. No children were directly rewarded or punished for their actions in the original experiment. Vicarious reinforcement does explain why they copy behaviour. SLT explains differences in aggressive and non- aggressive behaviour.
