1 The Amazon Rainforest A tour through one of the most beautiful and exciting places in the world!

2 What is a Rainforest? A tropical rainforest is a forest that has many trees, a very warm climate and plenty of different wild life! Rainforests can be found in many places on the globe, most located near the equator. The largest rainforest of them all is the Amazon Rainforest!

3 Here is a map of the world
Here is a map of the world. The orange areas are where rainforests can be located. The red line is the equator. Which continent has the most area covered with rainforests? Image provided by

4 A rain forest is home to thousands and thousands of trees of all different types and sizes. Because the rainforest has such a unique arrangement of its trees, the trees have been classified into five different levels. The Emergent trees at the very top grow the highest above any of the other trees in the rainforest and get the most sunlight. The lowest layer called the Forest Floor is very dark and wet. Many of the animals and insects that can only climb on the ground will live here. This area gets the least amount of sunlight. Image provided by cobwebsandseaslugs.com/rainforests/

5 The Canopy Where do you think you could find most of the plant and animal life in the rainforest? It’s not the Forest Floor, but actually the Canopy! The Canopy is the unique feature rainforests have! Many monkeys, frogs, lizards, birds, snakes, sloths and small felines (cats) live in this area! About 70%-90% of all the living species in the rainforest live in this one area! Image provided by

6 Animals of the Rainforest
This is a Spider Monkey which is actually quite large in size. They like to hang upside-down and swing from branch to branch. The Spider Monkey spends most of the time in the canopy. There are 40 different types of Toucans. They have large colorful bills in a combination of colors. The bills is used to smash fruits and berries for the bird to eat. The toucan also lives in the canopy. The sloth is an extremely, slow-moving animal that lives in the trees of the canopy. The sloth can have two or three toes. Sloths are nocturnal and sleep during the day. Some sloths can live in the same tree for years! The Poison Arrow Frog has bright colors to warn other animals that they are poisonous. One frog carries enough poison to kill 100 people! They can be red, blue or yellow in color. Images and information from

7 What is the climate like?
The Amazon Rainforest is almost always raining and can receive up to 80 inches of rainfall a year! The weather is very humid with temperatures resting between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. (Summer weather)

8 People of the Rainforest
Those that live in the rainforest depend on the environment to survive. They use nature to help with food, shelter and medicines. Kids in the rainforest have different hobbies than you. The kids play outside in the forest and the rivers and streams. They don’t watch TV or play video games, but do many of the same things you do. The kids help their families with chores and go to school. At an early age, kids learn how to fish, hunt and collect materials and food that are found in the forest. Image and information from

9 Rainforests are important to us all…
The rainforest has many trees. Trees help produce oxygen to the rest of the world. Humans and animals need oxygen to survive. Since there are so many trees in the rainforest, this environment is very important to life. The trees provide shelter to a majority of the animals living in the rainforest. Some of these animals are endangered and are close to becoming extinct. Image provided by savannahmakay/Places.html

10 What is happening to the Rainforest?
Sections of the rainforest are disappearing everyday. This is called deforestation. Humans are cutting down areas for the use of lumber, clearing land for new farms or for road construction. Sadly, a part of the rainforest the size of New Jersey is cut down each day! The plants and animals that live in the areas that are cut down eventually die or must move to find a new home.
