Combining the strengths of UMIST and The Victoria University of Manchester Students need to be brought up to speed on core terminology and methodology Students need to see how that terminology can be applied Students do not need theories in the first year Students need to develop an enquiring, open attitude to language data Students need to get used to understanding data from a language they are not familiar with Students need to understand the relation between linguistics and neighbouring disciplines First year courses should have a link with more advanced courses in second and final year Some underlying ideas
