2 Romans 5:20-6:1 5:20-21 tells of grace abounding where sin increased 6:1 Question raised to teach about sin Theme: The righteous or justified man’s relationship with sin Method: asked a question/answered it What then? May it never be! (Rom. 3:3-4)

3 Questions in Romans 6 6:1 Refers to sin and grace increasing 6:15 Same issue, but law added

4 Chapter 6 divided Verses 1-14 Those who died with Christ are free from sin Verses 15-23 No longer slaves to sin, but slaves to God and righteousness

5 Verses 1-7 Baptized with Christ into His death United with Him in His resurrection Raised to walk in newness of life Relate to chapters 1-3: None are righteous Relate to chapter 4: Abraham’s example Relate to chapter 5: Adam - death Christ - life

6 Romans 6:6-7 The old self was crucified with Christ The body of sin was done away with Believers are no longer slaves to sin If a person dies, then he is free from whatever slavery he might have been in

7 Verses 8-11 Alive with Christ He was raised from the dead and lives Death no longer reigns or is master over Him Therefore: Believers were raised with Him and live in new life Death no longer reigns over us Consider yourself dead to sin/alive to God

8 Verses 12-14 Believers CAN control whether or not they sin. Sin is no longer their master Don’t LET it reign Don’t obey sin’s lusts Use your body as an instrument of righteousness BECAUSE: The righteous shall live by faith

9 Verses 15-19 Sin, grace and now the Law Obedient from the heart vs. 17 The righteous do not continue to live in sin vs. 19 After dying with Christ and being raised to new life, they can present themselves obedient from the heart. Slaves to righteousness- sanctification

10 Verses 20-23 What benefit from the things of which you are now ashamed? None. Only death Now – Freed from sin and enslaved to God – sanctification – eternal life FREE GIFT – eternal life Free gift – by grace Free gift – brings righteousness The righteous shall live by faith
