LEVEL 1 - PRE-PRODUCTION OR “SILENT PERIOD” focus on content-area vocabulary demonstrate, circle, point, draw, match construct a models, diaramas answer “yes/no” and “either/or” questions complete graphic organizer categorize classify arrange pictures in a sequence label illustrations assemble examples create poster, PPT

LEVEL 2- EARLY PRODUCTION conduct oral rather than written test sequence; re-order steps in a flow chart show, circle, point, highlight, underline complete graphic organizer respond with single words or short sentences complete a short fill-in-the-blank passage using a word bank allow use of notes, textbook list identify “odd man out”

LEVEL 3- LOW INTERMEDIATE FLUENCY re-tell fill-in-the-blank when given 1 st letter of missing word(s) modify, simplify grammar and vocabulary of test prompts make an oral report after class

LEVEL 4 - HIGH INTERMEDIATE FLUENCY use vocabulary in short sentences use phrases or short sentences to answer “how” or “why” journals/letters make predictions summarize (specify number of required sentences) compare/contrast

TO MODIFY EXISTING TESTS FOR LES ANDFES STUDENTS: simplify grammar and vocabulary read test aloud to student allow oral responses provide additional time allow use of bilingual dictionary limit # of test items limit # of multiple choice options underline, bold key vocabulary allow limited use of books with pg. #s allow use of class notes include visuals, charts, graphs provide a word bank provide 1 st sentence of essay give essay questions before test keep checklist of daily observations assemble portfolio of student work
