Reading fluency is the ability to read quickly and easily. A simple way to know if your child is reading fluently is to listen to him/her read grade level text aloud. Fluency
2
Fluency Checklist: ACCURACY: I read the words correctly RATE: I read not too fast and not too slow EXPRESSION: I read with feeling and I didn’t sound like a robot PUNCTUATION: I follow most or all of the punctuation marks as I read the text
3
Model fluent reading! Focus on expression, character voices, and punctuation. Help your child choose books at his/her independent reading level. Use the 5-finger rule as a guide. Repeated reading is the best strategy! Read the story first and then have your child re-read the same text at least 3 more times. How can I help my child read fluently?
4
Have your child listen to a taped recording of a book. Encourage your child to point to the words on the page to strengthen word recognition skills. When coming to an unknown word give your child 5 seconds. If you have to provide the word be sure to have him/her repeat the word while pointing to the word in text. Using Raz-Kids improves oral reading fluency!
5
Teach your child high frequency words! Use rapid word charts How can I help my child read fluently?
6
Fluency Reminders Practice these skills at least 15 minutes per day to improve fluency! Fluency provides the bridge between word recognition and comprehension.
