East Africa is a region of many landscapes and species of wildlife. › Deserts, lakes, plateaus, grasslands, beaches East Africa has rift valleys, places on Earth’s surface where the crust stretches until it breaks. (plate tectonics) › The Great Rift Valley is the largest rift on earth and is found in Kenya/Ethiopia.

The highest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro, is a volcanic mountain. It is located in Tanzania. Near equator but snow on top due to high elevation (19, 340 ft.) Tanzania also has the Serengeti Plain, a large plain where wildlife thrives. › Now a national park

The Nile actually begins in East Africa. › (remember it flows north into Egypt) The Nile is formed by the joining of 2 rivers: the White Nile and the Blue Nile. These rivers meeting in Sudan and form THE Nile. TURN TO PAGE 394 The White Nile is formed with water from Africa’s largest lake, Lake Victoria.

Depending on the elevation, E. `Africa can be hot OR cool. Areas near the equator receive the highest amount of rainfall. Some areas further from the equator have droughts, periods of little rainfall/damaged crops.
