Orbis- What Is It and How Do I Access It? u Orbis is a global financial database u Access: via web pages and electronic resources u via the library catalogue

Types of Search u Depending on how you login, the default is usually quick search u Also advanced search option u We will look at the functions available on quick search first u There appears a menu box with various search boxes u E.G first is company name: Tesco OR BT OR BA etc.

Orbis – Quick Search u Next choice is LOCATION u Country u County u Post code areas u Phone code

Industry size: by employees, turnover or total assets u Legal form : I.E public or private company u Ownership I.E independent u Mergers & Acquisitions & period u Status: active or inactive (or dead) u Top companies : all, 10,25, 50, 100, 150 u Based on assets, employees or turnover Orbis – Quick Search

Orbis – Quick Search u When search has ran, on top left are a no. of tabs u COMPANY REPORT choose from A WIDE VARIETY OF headings with submenus u If you require less data Click on Format & New u Use the > to add the data you require and click on save u Click Layout to change display u Click List to go back to the list of companies found

Quick Search – Peer Analysis u This will display companies within the same market sector – your company will appear in BOLD u Click on P icon next to company name to view this information u You can also display the data in specific types of chart by clicking on the buttons at the bottom of the screen

Quick Search -Other Analyses u There are five specialist choices here and you click NEW and choose the fields you wish to include: Only for the EXPERT! u Segmentation u Aggregation u Distribution u Concentration & u Linear Aggression

Quick Search - Layout u To change default display click GRAPHS u Choose from list which data you want to display as a graph u Or Click on E to get an overview with Graphs

Orbis - Expert Search To change to expert search or vice versa click on option on left hand side of first search page u Expert search has an expandable list of different types of search criteria, includes those in quick search and financials, ratios, credit scoring, stock data, directors, auditors, accounting data and miscellaneous u Click on the heading to expand it u The main difference is the initial display

Orbis - Expert Search u Company Name – type in box u Choose from List N.b PLc is the usual u E.g Tesco PLC Click > to add it u If there is more than one of interest: u Repeat the process then click on ok u Choose the type of report you want to view, from Tabs on top left of page as with Quick Search u As with quick Search you can choose to view the formatted headings/sub menus

Customise Expert Search u User Defined Variables allow you to choose from types of information you wish to include in your report. A Blank Search Box Will appear u Click on the NEW button u Under Sections-leave on profile or make selections from the drop down menu: u Profit & Loss: Balance Sheet : Cash Flow u Financial Ratios or Trends & Changes u Profitability Ratios or Trends & Changes u Ignore User Defined variables option u Can change year and monetary values

Why Use Expert Search ? u The main reason is for STOCK DATA u Useful if DataStream & Bloomberg are not available u Choose Stock DATA & type of Stock Exchange u Or specific Indices u Click on LIST Tab or select a company and then choose Company report u You can choose specific companies for peer analyses

Storing your Search u At the top right of page there are the following icons: u Envelope with SEND To which enables you to email the report u PRINT – self explanatory! u EXPORT – allows you to save as different types of file, e.g WORD, EXCEL, RTF

Ending your session u Make sure you have printed/emailed/saved your search u Click on the LOGOUT icon at the top right u Close the Browser
