Parts of a Map Key – explains the symbols used on a map
Boundary Lines – highlights the borders between countries or other regions Compass rose – a marker that indicates the cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) Cities – represented by a dot Capitals – national capitals are represented (usually) by a star with a circle Scale bar – shows the scale distance used on a map

Using Scale Scale – a proportion between the distance on a map and the distance in real life Small scale maps – shows a large area but not a lot of detail Large scale maps – show a small area but a lot of detail

Types of Maps General Purpose Maps – show a wide range of information about an area Physical maps – shows the location and topography (physical features) Political maps – show the boundaries between countries or states. Often include human-made features Special Purpose Maps – emphasize a single idea or particular piece of information
