Grammar Flip Book: The 8* Parts of Speech
Take out four pieces of paper. Let’s make a flip book. 1 Noun 2 Verb 3 Adjective 4 Adverb 5 Pronoun 6 Interjection 7 Conjunction 8 Preposition *9 Article (back side)

Noun (red) A word used to name a person, place, thing, animal, or idea. Examples: William, girl, New York, library, ball, Stanley Cup, dog, love kick the ball

Verb (orange) A word that expresses an action or a state of being.
Examples: Action verbs: run, kick, go, think, play, read, stumble, touch Helping verbs: be, am, is, are, was, were, been, do, does, did, have, has, had, can, could, shall, should, will, would, may, might, must, ought, ought to kick the ball have the ball

Adjective (yellow) A word used to describe a noun or pronoun.
Examples: shiny, dangerous, new, bouncy, green, noisy, colorful, wooden colorful ball

Adverb (green) A word that describes and adds information to a verb or a verb phrase. (-ly) Examples: quickly, soon, very, rather, too, almost, only, quietly quickly kick the ball

Pronoun (blue) A word that takes the place of a noun. Examples:
he, she, them, him, we, you, us, mine, yours, theirs kick the ball to him

Interjection (purple)
A word that usually occurs alone and expresses emotion. Examples: oh, hello, ah, ouch, phew, yuck, hooray, help, er, um, oops Ouch!

Conjunction (brown) A word used to link words and clauses. Examples:
and, but, nor, for, or, so, yet, neither, because bat and ball

Preposition (pink) A word that indicates the relationship between two people or things, usually in terms of where they are. Hint: Think of a box. (In the box, Around the box, Through the box) Examples: with, under, on, behind, into, over, across kick the ball behind you

*Article (gray) A word used with a noun to refer to a specific person (or someone in general) or thing (or something in general). Examples: a, an, the the ball

Parts of speech…putting it all together
Here’s an example of a sentence that uses all of the 8* parts of speech. The boy quickly kicked his bouncy ball past a defender, but in his haste he stumbled. Oops!
