3. EVERYDAY SYMBOLS AND FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE What are some symbols we see everyday? What are phrases that we don’t actually mean literally? How would say them if we wanted to mean it in a literal sense and not figurative.

4. BRAINSTORM What literal images do you think of when you hear the words “fire” and “ice?” Let’s brainstorm a list of ideas, objects, or events that you associate with these two words.

5. FIGURATIVE USE Read the following sentences. What is being compared to what? What is the effect of the language? Her icy stare let me know just how she felt. He acted so cold to me that I knew he was still angry. His face was red and flushed with the heat of his anger. The fierce fire in her eyes made her attitude clear. What do the images of fire and ice represent or symbolize in the sentences above? When images are used figuratively rather than literally, they are being used symbolically. That means the image represents itself but also stands for something abstract.
