Octane Background Info  Releases carbon fumes ~ not environmentally healthy  Highly flammable and can be explosive  $50/Barrel ~ Not overly costly  Most bang for your buck  Equation ~ 2C 8 H 18 + 25O 2 --> 16 CO 2 + 18 H 2 O

Methanol Background Info  Water soluble and biodegradable ~ occurs naturally in environment  Very environmentally friendly ~ burns cleanly  Often used as a replacement fuel for others fuels  $202.50/Barrel  Doesn’t run well on its own ~ often has to be combined with another gas (gasoline)  Equation ~ 2CH 3 0H + 3O 2 --> 2CO 2 + 4H2 O

Ethanol Background Info  Renewable energy source  Runs a little better than methanol  Better when blended with other gases (gasoline)  $654/barrel  Burns cleanly ~ naturally clean burn  Burns slowly ~ 2x as slow as methanol and ethanol  Most bang for your buck  Equation ~ C 2 H 5 OH + 3O 2 --> 2CO 2 + 3H2 0  Ethanol is a gas

Comparison  Moles/Barrel  Octane:8 moles/barrel ~ 2,500 moles of Octane/budget  Methanol: 15 moles/barrel ~ 329 moles of Methanol/budget  Ethanol: 27 moles/barrel ~ 56 moles of Ethanol/budget  Cost/Mole  Octane: $6.25/mole  Methanol: $13/mole  Ethanol: $17/mole Each Equation Produces The Same Amount Of Energy Octane (1 unit of energy)-->makes 16 CO2 Methanol (1 unit of energy)-->makes 2 CO2 Ethanol (1 units of energy)-->makes 2 CO2

Comparison Most Healthy 1. Ethanol 2. Methanol 3. Octane Least Costly 1.Octane 2.Methanol 3.Ethanol Best MPG 1.Ethanol 2.Methanol 3.Octane 1 Million Dollar Budget! 60,000 Units of Energy!

Our Fuel Choice is...  Ethanol

Why We Chose Ethanol  Cleanest Energy Source  Best MPG  MPG makes up for cost ~ buy it less often  Easiest to get~ Renewable/In abundance  Best ratio of MPG+Cost/Healthy  Pays off better in long run

Why Not The Others?  Octane is too dirty of a fuel  With our budget of 1 million dollars we can get ;  20,000 barrels of Octane  1,529 barrels of Ethanol  4,938 barrels of Methanol  Ethanol’s MPG makes up for the cost in the long run and its most healthy

Our Values We came to the conclusion that we value the MPG and well being of the environment over the cost. In fact the cost is made up in the MPG because with ethanol you have to take less trips to the gas station, therefore spending less money. This is why ethanol is the best choice for Future Fuels -Future Fuels Team
