TOPIC: Life in the Trenches
OBJECTIVE: 10. Describe the horrible and dangerous conditions of life in the trenches. KD ANSWERS: 3. No Man’s Land: p. 25 The area between the two opposing trenches; it had holes from artillery strikes, barbed wire and dead bodies. 4. Why can we know so much about WWI and life in the trenches? (2) p. 26 Many of the soldiers could read and write. Many wrote letters and kept diaries, which have been used by historians.

KD: 5. Read Sources A - H on pages 26 and 27.
Match each Statement with ONE of the Sources. Statement & Source Soldiers were kept busy, even when they weren’t fighting. The death of soldiers made life in the trenches disgusting. Soldiers had time to think and sometimes worried about what might happen. There were dangers and disgusting creatures in the trenches. Artillery bombardments seemed to destroy and terrify soldiers. Some soldiers were bored and wanted to fight. The rain and the mud made the trenches miserable and dangerous. Soldiers had to be careful from snipers. The British Army wanted to distract soldiers from the reality of the war. Some soldiers kept detailed diaries.

ESSAY PRACTICE and SOURCES ANALYSIS:
Your assignment will be to write a letter to a friend describing what life in the trenches was like. Use pages 26 – 27 (Sources A - H) and Sources that we reviewed, to get some ideas. This assignment is worth 12 marks. Be CREATIVE with your analysis and QTS. Put the info from the Sources into an accurate and descriptive summary of life in the trenches. Review Objective #10 and emphasise the ‘horrible and dangerous’ conditions.
