The River as a Symbol In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the river serves as a symbol of protection on which Huck and Jim retreat from society and develop a friendship free from the harshness of society. To support this statement, you will find textual evidence from the novel that shows a comparison between Huck and Jim’s time alone on the river to their time either with other people (society) or on land. You will find three quotes that describe some aspect of their time alone on the river and three quotes that describe some aspect of the time they are on land or amongst society. For each quote you find, you will explain thoroughly how it supports the statement above.
