CARRIE CHAPMAN CATT Joined the suffrage movement in 1887 Took over the National American Woman's Suffrage Association also know as the (NAWSA) Came up with a plan to pass the 19 th amendment (“Winning Plan”) Founded the League of Women voters Worthy succesor,increased the size of the organization and conducted substantial fundraisers that helped the organization Left in 1904 due to family issues,but returned after her husband died

WELLS African American born a slave Freed do to Emancipation Proclamation Wrote editorials for newspaper of African Americans and the rough situations they were going through Teacher in segregated schools (For African Americans) Established civil rights organizations (National association for colored people,National association for advancement in colored people)

NATIONAL WOMENS SUFFRAGE ASSOCIATION Also known as the NWSA Created to help women gain rights Established by Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1869 when the women's right movement split in two Wanted women to have help in various social issues such as marriage and divorce They condemned the 14 th and 15 th amendment as unjust Unionization of women workers

ALICE PAUL Born January 11 1885 Pushed for woman's rights movement Returned to the U.S in 1910 and got involved in the women's suffrage movement At first she was part of the NAWSA but focused on state by state campaign A member of the National Woman's party Preferred to lobby congress for an amendment on the constitution Demanded constitutional amendment for the right to vote for women

Jailed various times for disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace Even after being debilitated from a stroke in 1974 she continued fighting for women's rights until her death in 1977

19 TH AMENDMENT Guaranteed women the right to vote Many Americans considered it a radical change to the constitution On May 21 1919 amendment was passed by representatives then by the senate ¾ the states voted for the law to be passed Ratified August 18 1920 Women had different strategies to gain their rights

Men wanted to dominate and women thought if black men had the right to vote why shouldn’t women have that right to Only when convenient were women “people”
