Mapping Biography RC to ENGLISH Curriculum Introduction to American Literature The United States is home to many literary traditions, sometimes seen as separate but all intertwined and interconnected. The "classic" American literature that originates in New England is just one part of a dialogue that includes Native American, Latino American, and African-American traditions older than the United States itself, as well as Asian Pacific American and ethnic European traditions that reach back well into the nineteenth century. This course offers an introduction to these literary cultures of the United States, with emphasis on the richness of their range and variety. This course will include texts by such writers as Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, Bharati Mukherjee, Gish Jen, and Toni Kushner.
