During the 2007 season, over 150 mutants and genetic stocks were planted (April 20) in a field nursery and made available for researchers to visit during the annual Rice Field day at Stuttgart. Some 50 U.S. and international cultivars commonly used by the research community were also planted as a reference. Selections from the Kinoshita Collection of Japanese mutants were planted, representing such phenotypes as: minute grains, dense or compact panicles, open panicles, long to short awns; tan, gold and purple hulls, long outer glumes, and lazy plants. Accessions ranged from 16 cm to 124 cm in height and from 59 to 133 days for flowering. Researchers were invited to visit Stuttgart and make their own observations of this collection. 2007 GSOR Demonstration Plot 1/12

The GSOR plot as observed on June 7. 2/12

A mutant from the Kinoshita Collection, GSOR #300155, expresses the symptoms of brown leaf spot, June 7. 3/12

GSOR 300167, drooping leaf GSOR 300120, lazy plant type (second row from left) 4/12

GSOR 300164, light green leaves GSOR 300158, deep purple leaves 5/12

GSOR 300161, headed at 61 days GSOR 300141, with gold panicles headed at 66 days after planting. 6/12

GSOR 300113, which has a procumbent, or lazy plant type, has been tied up to prevent the panicles from laying in the water. 7/12

The GSOR plot is flourishing at 77 days after planting. 8/12

GSOR material, behind and to the left of the plot sign, has begun to head at 85 days after planting. 9/12

No. of Accessions per Heading Group Material in the GSOR Demo Plot began anthesis (heading) at 59 days. Days to anthesis is the number of days from effective seeding date until 50% of main tillers show panicles at least partly emerged from boot. 10/12

No. of Accessions per Height Group Plant Height Group 11/12
