Atonement and the Cross of Christ Our Goal {181} As you study the meaning of Christ’s substitutionary sacrifice, be moved toward a greater commitment to the One who suffered so much for you, so that whether you live or die, you can do so in peace.

Atonement Announced Key Text Isaiah 53:5 NIV “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

Atonement Announced Initial Words {235} The Lord immediately announced the good news to fallen human beings. The Lord also made sure that this promise, that of redemption, was kept fresh and alive in their minds. God created institutions and laws directly tied to His plan of salvation that illustrated its workings.

Atonement Announced Quick Look 1. Promised to Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:15) 2. Illustrated in Abraham and Isaac (Genesis 22:13) 3. Revealed in Moses and Daniel (Exodus 34:6, 7; Daniel 9:26, 27)
10
Atonement Announced 1. Promised to Adam and Eve Genesis 3:15 NKJV “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.”
11
1. Promised to Adam and Eve The Seed {236} Christians have correctly found in Genesis 3:15 a prophecy of the Messiah. 1. The context indicates that the serpent is an instrument of rebellion against God. This evil power defeated Adam and Eve and extended its dominion over the descendants of the woman.
12
The Seed Genesis 3:15 Prophecy {236} 2. It announces the destruction of the serpent by the Seed of the woman. The attack against the Seed (at its heel) is not fatal; the Seed, though will crush the serpent’s head, indicating ultimate demise. 3. Whenever “seed” denotes a particular descendant, the pronoun that follows it is in the singular. The “Seed” of the woman is Jesus.
13
The Seed Genesis 3:15 Prophecy {236} What Genesis 3:15 suggests is that as soon as sin entered the world, God’s eternal plan of salvation through Christ was put into effect. Adam and Eve did not experience eternal death because, from the divine perspective, Christ the Lamb “that was slain from the creation of the world” (Rev 13:8 NIV).
14
Atonement Announced 2. Illustrated in Abraham and Isaac Genesis 22:13 NKJV “Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horn. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.”
15
2. Illustrated in Abraham and Isaac Saw My Day {238} By asking Abraham to sacrifice his son, God was pronouncing a sentence against him and bringing to an end His special purpose for him. All this, however, changes in a radical way when a ram was offered in the place of Isaac.
16
2. Illustrated in Abraham and Isaac Saw My Day {238} God provided what Abraham desperately needed, a sacrificial animal that could take the place of his son, making it possible for the Lord to renew the covenant with him. The human sacrifice (i.e., the death of the sinner) was substituted by the sacrificial victim provided by the Lord, not Abraham.
17
Atonement Announced 3. Revealed in Moses Exodus 34:6, 7 NKJV “And the L ORD … proclaimed, ‘The L ORD, the L ORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin….”
18
3. Revealed in Moses Mediator Type {240} Moses himself became the mediator of the people, their intercessor, seeking to obtain for them redemption from their sin. He offered himself to the Lord as a means of atonement! He was willing to have his name deleted from the book of life if that would make it possible for the people to be restored to harmony with the Lord.
19
3. Revealed in Moses Mediator Type {240} The Lord revealed Himself to Moses as a forgiving God. The Hebrew word translated “forgiving” literally means “bearing.” The way God deals with our sin is by removing it from us and bearing it Himself. Moses could not do that; God had already decided the He would do it through His Servant.
20
Atonement Announced 3. Revealed in Daniel Daniel 9:26, 27 NKJV “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself… Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for a week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
21
3. Revealed in Daniel 70 Weeks Prophecy {244} God expected His people to be ready for the coming of the Messiah. What this incredible prophecy shows, in a very clear way, is not only that God is in absolute control of every aspect of His work of salvation but that He will make sure it accomplishes its eternally intended purpose.
22
Atonement Announced Final Words {246} Centuries before Christ was on earth the Lord gave us promises of salvation. The question remains, How should we respond to the reliability and trustworthiness of the Lord as revealed in the fulfillment of those promises?
