IS 201 S1 G1 Intercultural Communication and Education: Cuba AVILA UNIVERSITY October 9 – 17 / 2015

The course at Avila interdisciplinary investigation into culture and education, specifically of the intersection of intercultural communication and the rights and privileges of education, embedded within a cultural immersion experience. Students will examine: Interpersonal communication, beginning with self and expanding to an intercultural stance, with a particular emphasis on new media and technology. Values, beliefs and attitudes of diverse identifiable groups Role that the members of the cultural power structure, specifically majorities, minorities, subcultures and co-cultures, contribute within the larger culture, Role of and rights to education in those groups. How a culture is influenced by its space, including architecture, landscape, and issues of privacy, time and climate. How non-verbal communication, social relationships, cultural differences and conflict resolution vary considerably from one culture and context to another. Students will be required: to reflect, self-report and assess their own intercultural capabilities, through a critical comparative lens focusing on diverse cultures and systems of education.

Tentative Itinerary Day 1 – Saturday, 10 October – Arrive in Havana “Callejon de Hamel” – (2 hours) Check-in Hotel Parkview (CP) Welcome Dinner at “La Barraca” in Hotel Nacional Day 2 – Sunday, 11 October – Trinidad Depart to Trinidad lunch at “Los Caneyes” in Santa Clara City tour Trinidad, included: Visit Romantic Museum Potter – Santander – “Casa del Alfarero” family owned clay factory Check in at Hotel “Las Cuevas”. Dinner at Trinidad

Day 3 – Monday, 12 October – Trinidad Visit Elementary School “Marcelo Salado” Visit Valle de los Ingenios / Torre Iznaga Women’s Coop Lunch Check in ParkView Dinner at Havana Day 4 – Tuesday, 13 October – Havana Walking tour of the four square with guided by preservationist, including a visit to: Habitacion de Hemingway Lunch at Habana Vieja Visit Tobacco Factory Visit to “Universidad de la Habana” Dinner at “Moneda Cubana” restaurant

Day 5 – Wednesday, 14 October – Havana Visit Intermediate School “Olof Palme” – this was an excellent visit; we can do a project with students here (painting?) Tour of Hemingway’s estate Finca Vigia Visit and lunch Fuster’s home Dinner at La Moraleja (paladar at 25th E/H y I) Day 6 – Thursday, 15 October – Havana Visit ENA (Arts National Schools – at least 2 of the schools? Dance? Music? Art?) Ibis del Carmen Torres Reyes Promotora Cultural Visita and lunch with Jose and the students we’ll be working with in the community Project- Monte de Espuma with Jose Antonio – community art Project. Dinner at Havana Nighttime event at the Jazz Club

Day 7 – Friday, 16 October – Las Terrazas Visit Las Terrazas Community Visit Coffee Plantation Lunch at “La Casa del Campesino” Afternoon for students to explore (zip line, shop, swimming pool?) Return to Havana Day 8 – Saturday, 17 October – Havana to Miami Breakfast at hotel Airport

Lunches and Dinners… Suggested tip is… The priced itinerary covers the following: All breakfasts paid and arranged at the hotels 5 lunches -paid and arranged 6 dinners-paid and arranged $5.00/day/person for each the driver and the guide. Restaurants $1-2.00 per person
