1 Management of the Internet
Organizations Standardization Copyright issues

2 The Characteristic Types of the Internet Services
Internet Service Providers (ISP) Guaranteed bandwidth international TCP/IP access Average bandwidth domestic and international TCP/IP access TCP/IP access in switched line Application Service Providers (ASP)

3 Internals of ISP 31

4 Some Internet Related organizations
Internet Society (ISOC) Internet Architecture Board (IAB) Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) WWW Consortium (W3C) National organisations (every country has similar): Hungarnet Society Council of Internet Service Providers (ISZT) Budapest Internet eXchange (BIX)

5 Standardization the process of establishing a technical standard among competing entities in a market where this will bring benefits without hurting competition Types: patented standard (e.g.: IBM SNA) public standard (e.g.: ITU, ISO or IEEE standards) non-official standard (e.g.: RFC)

6 International Standards Organizations
There are many international standards organizations International Organization for Standardization (ISO) International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

7 Standards/Standards Bodies
The Internet Society Internet Architecture Board (IAB) defines overall architecture of the Internet provides broad guidance for IETF Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) provides technical management of IETF and the Internet standards process Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) designs and develops Internet protocols charters standards working groups publishes RFCs, with approval of IESG Eight areas defined: General, Applications, Internet, Operations & Management, Routing, Security, Transport, User Services

8 Internet Standards Organizations
Internet Architecture Board (IAB) Technical advisory group of the Internet Society Its responsibilities include: IESG Selection Architectural Oversight Standards Process Oversight and Appeal RFC Series editorial management and publication Administration of the various Internet assigned numbers Representative of the Internet Society with other organizations concerned with standards and other technical and organizational issues relevant to the world-wide Internet Advice and guidance the Board of Trustees and Officers of the Internet Society (ISOC) concerning technical, architectural, procedural, and (where appropriate) policy matters pertaining to the Internet and its enabling technologies

9 Internet Standards Organizations
The Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) Responsible for technical management of IETF activities The Internet standards process final approval of specifications as Internet Standards

10 Internet Standards Organizations
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) It is open to any interested individual Develops standards considered by the Internet Engineering Steering Group Internet Architecture Board. IETF RFCs and the RFC Editor Requests for Comments (RFCs) Document series Defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and its steering group the IESG The RFC Editor supported (funds) by the Internet Society responsible for preparing and organizing the standards in their final form

11 Internet Standards Organizations RFC – Publication Process
Creating an RFC Before it can be published as an RFC, a document must first be published as an Internet Draft Submission Process RFCs from the IETF Independent Submissions Evaluation of RFC: proposed standard (6 month) draft (6 month maximum, but after 4 months it can became RFC) standard (RFC) (up to obsolescence)

12 Internet Standards Organizations
Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) Work on topics related to Internet protocols Applications Architecture Technology Managed by IRTF Chair Internet Research Steering Group (IRSG) topical workshops focusing on the evolution of the Internet or more general workshops to discuss research priorities

13 Internet Standards Organizations
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) Preserving the central coordinating functions of the global Internet for the public good The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) IP address space allocation, Protocol parameter assignment, Domain name system management, Root server system management functions European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) Produce the telecommunications standards

14 Internet Standards Organizations
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Develops specifications, guidelines, software, and tools to lead the Web to its full potential as a forum for information, commerce and communication International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland International organization within the United Nations System Members are governments and the private sector Coordinate global telecommunication networks and services ITU-T responsible for telecommunications standardization process

15 Internet RFC Process Historic Experimental Best Current Practice
Informational Internet Standard Draft Standard Proposed Standard Internet Draft

16 Standards/Standards Bodies
International Telecommunications Union (ITU) United Nations agency Members are governments ITU-T (replaced CCITT) drives telecommunications standardization process organized as 14 study groups 4-year cycle/study period for standards (but changing)

17 Standards/Standards Bodies
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc (IEEE) LAN Standards: IEEE 802 Subsequently ISO 8802 currently organized into seventeen working groups e.g. IEEE 802.3 IEEE defines overall architecture and practices for LANs/MANs

18 Topology of the BMENET
