11
Introduction When you finish your cluster map and know what you are writing about, decide on a hook! Hook your reader with a: Definition Rhetorical Question Statement or Fact Quote Anecdote/Personal Experience Statement History or Background Information
12
Hook 1. Definition: Explain a term that is central to the thesis. This may be a dictionary definition or the writer’s definition. 2. Rhetorical Question: This question needs to be central to the thesis and answered in the essay. 3. Startling Statement or Relevant Fact: Either one can serve to interest the reader and direct attention to the thesis. 4. Quotation: A quotation from the book works especially well when writing a literary analysis essay. Remember a quotation may be any section of the book, dialogue, description, or narration. 5. Anecdote: A short interesting or humorous incident is another popular introductory technique. With this hook, the writer must be careful to keep it short in relation to the overall length of the essay. 6. History or Background Information: This type or hook gives information that establishes context for the paper. Never start an essay with a statement such as “In this essay I am going to write about …”
13
Background Information about Main Ideas After your hook, write one “background ” or informational sentence about each idea you are going to write about. Sentence for Main Idea 1 Sentence for Main Idea 2 Sentence for Main Idea 3
14
Thesis After your Background Information about your Main Ideas, write your Thesis Statement. REMBEMBER, your thesis statement should include: Topic Claim Points/Main Ideas

Introduction Example Prompt: Write an essay explaining what it means to be a true friend. Intro: According to The Webster’s Dictionary, the definition of friend is “a person who helps or supports someone or something”. This is an accurate representation of what a friend should be. Friends should be an aid when you are in need. Friends should be your crutch in any situation. Friends should push you to be your best at all times. A true friend is someone who is helpful, supportive, and builds your self-esteem.
16
You try!!!!!! Write your introduction paragraph for your essay. PROMPT: Write an essay explaining why it is important to respect people’s differences. YOU HAVE 15 MINUTES!!!!!!!
17
Conclusion The concluding paragraph effectively ends the essay by summing up the discussion in a few sentences. It gives the writer one last chance to make the point. A conclusion should: 1. Restate the thesis in slightly different words. 2. Summarize the main points of the body paragraph. 3. Explain the significance or importance of the thesis, leave the reader with something to think about.
18
Conclusion Example If a person is helpful, they are supportive, and they build you up when you are feeling down, they have the attributes of a true friend. You should always surround yourself with people who assist you, who back you up, and who encourage you in everything you do. At the end of the day, you have a choice of who you are friends with. Make sure they are your true friends.
