What? Started in Fall 1998 13th graduating Class in May Middle College originated in NY, 1974 One of 25 member schools in the Middle College Consortium (Dallas, Seattle, Chicago, Memphis, LA)

What? SMUHSD Alternative education program High school and college courses for credit Flexible scheduling Explore individual interests/career paths No tuition (<11.5 units) –Students pay for parking –Family pays for books, unless financial need

Who? 35 juniors and 35 seniors Students reside in SMUHSD and CUSD Academically capable Plans to complete high school Should be close to graduating on time At-risk students Not interested in HS activities

Why? Not all students thrive in a traditional school setting CSM offers variety of courses, some of which pertain to student’s career/educational goals Good alternative for independent, creative thinkers

How? Every day, students take... a 50-minute HS English class a 50-minute HS social science class a 50-minute Advisory class Students also take college courses to meet high school graduation requirements (at least 7 units; no more than 11.5 units)

Which students should attend Middle College? n Independent, yet responsible students n Not interested in activities and events at traditional high school n College-bound n Interested in flexible schedule to allow for volunteering or internship n Eager to “get on with life”

Benefits n Accumulate college units while completing high school n Popular programs, such as Administration of Justice, Electronics, Ethnic Studies, Multimedia, Computer Science, Fire Technology, Speech, Psychology, among others n Tutoring centers (Writing, Computer Writing, Math, Reading) as well as other student services, including Psych services
