CRITICAL THINKING

Working independently, generate a list of as many characteristics of critical thinking and behaviors of a critical thinker as possible.

Working independently, review your list and determine the TOP FIVE characteristics/behaviors.

Working in a small group, compare your TOP FIVE lists, noting similarities and differences. Create a SUPER TOP FIVE list. Post each item on your list to AnswerGarden.AnswerGarden

Definition of Critical Thinking 1. "Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action" (Scriven, 1996). 2. "Critical thinking is thinking that assesses itself" (Center for Critical Thinking, 1996).

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Reason Effectively Use various types of reasoning (inductive, deductive, etc.) as appropriate to the situation Use Systems Thinking Analyze how parts of a whole interact with each other to produce overall outcomes in complex systems Make Judgments and Decisions Effectively analyze and evaluate evidence, arguments, claims and beliefs Analyze and evaluate major alternative points of view Synthesize and make connections between information and arguments Interpret information and draw conclusions based on the best analysis Reflect critically on learning experiences and processes Solve Problems Solve different kinds of non-familiar problems in both conventional and innovative ways Identify and ask significant questions that clarify various points of view and lead to better solutions

Questioning for Critical Thinking Read the text exemplar Write 3 – 5 questions you would ask your students about this text

Questioning for Critical Thinking As a table group, use the Bloom’s Taxonomy chart to map the location of your questions.

DID YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS IN THE ANALYZE AND EVALUATE COLUMNS?

Questioning for Critical Thinking Go back to your questions and rework them to increase the rigor and critical thinking Enter you questions into Tricider on the session Wiki.Wiki

Higher Order Thinking …is HOT! …can be learned. …can be improved with practice. …can be improved with practice for both children and adults. …should be practiced often in all of our schools, all of our classes, with all of our students 25

More about HOT… No one thinks perfectly or poorly all the time. Memorizing something is not the same as thinking about it. You can memorize something without understanding it. Thinking is done in both words and pictures. Thinking is useful in our everyday lives. You can improve your thinking skills by understanding the processes involved in thinking. Metacognition-thinking about thinking-is part of higher order thinking. 26
